These are just some ideas on areas where you may be able to cut back. There are other areas that you should consider and I am now going to give you my Top 50 money saving tips. These are tips that can and will save you money, and if you go through this list and find four or five areas that you can apply and use in your daily life, then great, because when you combine it with the other cost reducing areas I have just referred to, they will save you hundreds of euros each year.

50 Money Saving Tips

Don’t pay unnecessary fees to your bank or credit card company. Late fees and referral charges can cost you hundreds each year. Pay by direct debit each month from an account that is only used to pay bills, nothing else.

Shop around for home and life assurance premiums. Use an internet provider or an independent broker. I carried out this exercise for a client recently and saved her €679 in about five minutes because she was paying €379 more than she needed to for her life cover and €300 more for her home insurance.

Take good care of your house and car. Preventative maintenance is a lot less expensive than repair costs.

Changing your mobile phone provider can save you money. Make sure you match your plan with your usage. Don’t pay for services that you don’t use.

Always make a list before you go shopping and don’t shop on an empty stomach, you will end up spending more.

Plan meals for the week ahead. This will cut out trips for Take aways, so keep your freezer stocked with good, quick-fix meals. Buy bargain-priced, in-season produce.

Avoid buying items at eye level in the supermarket. This is where the most expensive items are placed.

Cut out your bad habits – cut down or try to eliminate your alcohol and cigarette consumption.

Limit the amount of coffees you have each day. Yes they may be really good, but too many can be an awful waste of money. Coffee only costs a few cents per cup when it’s made at home or brought to work.

Invite friends over instead of going out.

Don’t spend a fortune on entertaining your children or buying them toys every time you go shopping. They can be entertained very inexpensively; an adventure in the park or made-up games can be great fun. I loved playing marbles as a child and I was telling my kids, so one day I bought a packet of marbles for €1.50, brought them home and I showed the three of them the games I used to play. Well, the fun we had seeing who could throw the marble closest to the wall was incredible – and all for €1.50.

Keep your car well maintained. Make it part of your routine to have it checked twice a year, it will keep it going for a year or two more than you thought, saving you monthly car repayments that can now be used to pay down debt.
